One who knows his former abodes, who sees the blissful and the woeful states, who has reached the end of births, who, with superior wisdom, has perfected himself, and who has completed the holy life and has reached the end of all passions, him I call a Brahman.


生前の生涯を知り、あるいは天界と悪趣地を観て、又[この世において]生の滅尽をなし、証智して完成させた、寂黙の聖者、一切の完成させるべきすべてを完了せる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who is fearless like a bull, noble and diligent, who is a hero, a great sage, and conqueror (of three Maras), who is free from craning, who has cleansed himself of moral defilements, and who is enlightened, him I call a Brahman.


牛王[の如き]人、最も優れた人、英雄、大聖人、征服せる人、無貪愛の人、梵行終了者、覚者である彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who has no clinging to Aggregates that are past, future and present, and who is free from clinging and grasping, him I call a Brahman.


前[＝過去]にも、後[＝未来]にも、中間[＝現在]にも障碍が無く、無所有にして無取著なる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One whose destination is not known by gods, by gandhabbas, or by men, who has destroyed all corruptions, and who is far removed from passions, him I call a Brahman.


神々も伎楽神も人間たちも、[死後の彼の]行方を知らない、漏尽の阿羅漢である彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who in every detail knows the death and rebirth of beings, and who is nonattached, well-gone in practice (sugatam), and enlightened, him I call a Brahman.


あらゆる生きとし生けるものの『死』を、あるいは『転生』を知り、執着無く、幸福なる覚者の彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who has given up delight in sensual pleasures and has overcome an aversion to the solitary forest life, who is cooled and is without defilements, who has conquered the world (of the five khandhas), and who is strenuous, him I call a Brahman.


喜楽を、あるいは不楽を捨断して清涼となり、依る所なく、一切世間を征服せる英雄の彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who, discarding human ties and transcending celestial ties, is completely delivered from all ties, him I call a Brahman.


人間[界]の軛を捨断して、天界の軛を捨て去り、一切の軛から離縛せる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who in this world gives up craving, and renounces worldly life, and become a bhikkhu, and who has destroyed craving and becoming, him I call a Brahman.


この世において、渇愛を断ち切り、出家して遍歴をなし、愛有を滅尽せる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who in this world gives up sense-desires, renounces worldly life and becomes a bhikku, and who has destroyed sense-desires and becoming, him I call a Brahman.


この世において、愛欲を断ち切り、出家して遍歴をなし、欲有を滅尽せる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who has passed beyond this dangerous swamp (of passion), this difficult path (of moral defilements), the ocean of life (samsara), and delusion (moha), who has crossed the fourfold Flood and gone beyond the other shore (Nibbana), who is meditative and free from craving and doubts, and who, clings nothing, has attained perfect peace, him I call a Brahman.


この[貪欲という]ぬかるみを、[煩悩という]難路を、輪廻の[海]を、愚痴という[暗黒の世界]を越えて、[四つの暴流を]渡り[涅槃という]彼岸に到りて禅定があり、無貪愛にて疑いが無く、取著も無く、寂静せる彼を私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。
