The Bhikkhu who, while still young, devotes himself to the Teaching of the Buddha, light up the world, as does the moon freed from a cloud.


実に年若くても、仏教[の修行に]努力する比丘は、月が黒雲から脱する如く、この世間を輝かす。

Full of joy, full of confidence in the Buddha's Teaching, the bhikkhu will attain Nibbana, the Peaceful State, the Unconditioned, the Bliss (supreme).


喜悦が多く、仏教に浄信する比丘は、[すべての]現象が寂静した安楽な、善き境地に到達するであろう。

One is, indeed, one's own refuge, (how could anyone else be one's refuge?) One is, indeed, one's own haven; therefore, look after your own self as a marchant looks after a good donkey.


自分は実に自分の守護者なり、[誰が他人の守護者であろうか]、自分こそ実に自分のより所である。それ故、商人たちが賢いロバを[訓練する]如く、自己を制御せよ！

O Bhikkhu, admonish yourself by yourself; by yourself examine yourself. Self-guarded and mindful, you will live happily.


自分から自己を叱責して、自分から逆に[自己を]チェックせよ！　自分自身が守護者[であり]有念者[である]比丘は、安楽に居住するであろう。

The bhikkhu who is calm in body, calm in speech, and calm in mind, who is well-composed, and who has given up worldly things, is truly called a "peaceful one".


行動が寂静であり、語が寂静であり、又[意が]寂静であり、よく統一されて、世財を吐き出せる比丘は、『寂静なる人』と呼ばれる。

O Bhikkhus! As the jasmine (vassika) sheds its withered flowers, so should you totally cast off passion and hatred.


ジャスミンの花が萎びて落ちたる如く、比丘たちよ、かくの如く貪欲と瞋恚から解脱せよ！

Let him be amiable and be correct in his conduct; then filled with joy, he will make an end of dukkha (of the round of rebirths).


[彼と]挨拶する習慣があり、善行をおこなうならば、それ故、喜悦が多く[比丘は]苦の終極をおこなうであろう。

For a wise bhikkhu in this Teaching, this is the beginning (of the practice leading to Nibbana): control of the senses, contentment, and restraint according to the Fundamental Precepts (patimokkha). Associate with beneficent and energetic friends whose livelihood is pure.


ここに、この修行において智慧を得た比丘にとって最初のことがある。[それは]感覚知覚などの能力を守り、知足であり、そして戒条を守ることである。生活が清浄であり、倦怠のない善良な友に親近せよ！

Whenever he clearly comprehends the arising and perishing of the Aggregates, he experiences joy and happiness. To "those who know" that (comprehension) is the Deathless(Nibbana).


[五]蘊の生滅を思惟するたびに、彼は不死の[境地を]識知しながら、喜悦を得る。

The bhikkhu who goes to a lonely place to meditate, who has calmed his mind, and who clearly perceives the Dhamma, experiences the joy which transcends that of (ordinary) men.


人なき処に入り、心の寂静な比丘には、正しい法を観て、非人の楽がある。
