Knowing this, the wise man restrained by morality should quickly clear (the obstacles to) the Path leading to Nibbana.


この道理を知りて、戒[により]制御する賢者は、涅槃に導く道を速急に清める。

Not sons, nor parents, nor close relatives can protect one assailed by Death; indeed, neither kith nor kin can give protection.


死神に襲われている人には、子供たちは頼りにならず、たとへ父親や親族といえども[頼りに]ならず、友人縁者の所も庇護[所]とはならず。

The man who dotes on his children and his herds of cattle, whose mind longs for and is attached to sensual pleasures, is carried away by Death even as a sleeping village is swept away by a great flood.


[自分の]子供や家畜に理性を失わされて、執着の意が[ある]人を、[ちょうど]眠れる村を大暴流が[押し流す]如く、死王は奪い取って行く。

"Here will I live in the rainy season; here in the cold season and the hot season, too" so imagines the fool, not realizing the danger (of approaching death).


ここで雨の季節を、冬の季節も夏の季節もここで過ごさんと、かく考察する愚者は、[命の]障碍に目覚めない。

Cut off your craving as one plucks an autumn lily with the hand. Nibbana has been expounded on by the Buddha; cultivate that Path which leads to it.


手でもって秋の蓮を[つぶす]如く、自身の湿潤を絶滅せよ！　善逝の人によって説かれたる涅槃に[導く]寂静の道のみ[大切に]育成せよ！

For as long as craving of man for woman is not cut down and the slightest trace of it remains, for so long is one's mind in bondage, as the calf is bound to its mother.


実に愛林が[完全に]切られない限り、たとえ微量といえども女性に対する男性の[欲があれば]、乳を飲む子牛が母牛を[慕う]如く、それだれで彼の心は執着する。

O Bhikkhus, cut down the forest of craving, rather than real trees; the forest of craving breeds danger(of rebirth). Cut down the forest of craving as well as its undergrowth and be free from craving.


[愛林の]森を切り倒せ！　[自然の]木を切るなかれ！　愛林より恐怖が生まれる。愛林の森もその潅木も切りて、比丘たちよ、欲なきにせよ！

Indeed, wisdom is born of meditation; without meditation wisdom is lost. Knowing this two dual path of gain and loss wisdom, one should conduct oneself so that wisdom nay increase.


実に[瞑想の]努力は智慧を生み、[瞑想の]努力なきは智慧の消滅なり。有するあるいは離有する、この二つの道を知りて、智慧を増大すべく自分自身の確立させよ。

One should be careful in speech, be well restrained in mind, and do no evil physically, as well. One should purify these three ways of action and accomplish the practice of the Noble Eightfold Path made known by the Buddha.


語を慎み、心を善く制御して、又身体による不善を行わない。これら三つの業道を清めた[人]は、仙人によって説かれた道に満足せよ。

The idler who does not strive when he should be striving, who though young and strong is given to idelness, whose thoughts are weak and wandering, will not attain Magga Insight which can only be perceived by wisdom.


実に奮起する時に起き上がらず、若くて力がある[時に]懈怠を具せり、意気悄沈して、思惟も心も弱く、怠惰なる人は、智慧によって道を見出すことはない。
