The Bhikkhu who delights in heedfulness, and looks with fear on heedlessness, is not liable to fall. He is near to the Nibbana.


不放逸を楽しみ、又、放逸を恐怖と見る比丘は、[途中で]退失することは不可能であり、実に涅槃に近づく。

The Bhikkhu who delights in heedfulness, and looks with fear on heedlessness, advances like fire, burning all fetters great and small.


不放逸を楽しみ、又、放逸を恐怖と見る比丘は、火が[すべてのものを]焼き尽くすように、微小粗大[すべての]結縛を焼き捨て[涅槃]に行く。

By earnestness Maghava rose to the lordship of the gods. Earnestness is always praised; negligence is always despised.


マガ青年は、不放逸によって神々の最上位に達した。[賢者たちは]不放逸を賞賛して、放逸を常に非難する。

Heedful among the heedless, wide awake among the slumbering, the wise man advances as does a swift horse, leaving a weak horse behind.


駿馬が[足の]弱い馬を追い越すように、放逸な人々の中で不放逸であり、眠りに耽る人々の中で多く目覚める賢者は、[解脱に向かって]駆ける。

When an understanding one discards heedlessness by heedfulness, he, free from sorrow, ascends to the palace of wisdom and surveys the sorrowing folk. as a man on a top of mountain the wise surveys the groundlings.


賢者は不放逸によって放逸を除く時、智慧の高楼に登り、憂いに沈んだ人々を憂いなく[見る]。山頂に立つ人が地上に立つ[人々を見る]ように、賢者は愚者ほ見る。

Do not indulge in heedless; have no intimacy with sensuous delight. Truely, the earnest, meditative person obtains abundant bliss.


放逸に耽るな！　欲楽に親しむな！　実に禅定者たちは、不放逸によって大いなる安楽[＝涅槃]を得る。

The ignorant, foolish folk indulge in heedlessness; the wise man guards earnestness as the greatest treasure.


智慧のない愚かな人たちは、放逸に耽り、[智慧のある]賢者は、不放逸を最上の財産のように守る。

By sustained, effort, earnestness, discipline, and self-control let the wise man make for himself an island, which no flood overwhelms.


努力・不放逸・自制・調御[の四つに]よって賢者は、暴流に押し流されない[阿羅漢果の]島を作ることができる。

The glory steadily increases of him who is energetic, mindful, pure in deed, considerate, self-controlled, right-living, and heedful.


奮励努力して、よく気をつけて、行ないが清く、よく考えて行動し、[身・口・意を]自制して、法に従って生き、不放逸な生活をする人の誉れ、いよいよ上がる。

The wise constantly meditative, the ever steadfastly ones realize the bond-free, supreme Nibbana.


堅固な心をもつ禅定者たちは、[止・観の瞑想に]常に励み、たえず努力して、[四つの]軛から離れた無常の涅槃に触れる。
