Beings who know what is wrong as wrong and who know what is right as right, embrace right views and go to a happy plane of existence (suggati).


罪あるを罪ありと知る、あるいは罪なきを罪なしと[知る]、[この]正見を受持する有情たちは、善趣に行く。

Beings who imagine faults in what is not faults who do not acknowledge faults in what is faults embrace wrong views and go to a lower plane of existence (duggati).


罪なきを罪ありと思念する、あるいは罪ありを罪なしと見る。[この]邪見を受持する有情たちは、悪趣に行く。

Those beings who see danger in what is not dangerous and who do not see danger in what is dangerous embrace wrong views and go to a lower plane of existence (duggati).


恐るべからざるを恐れと見る、あるいは恐るべきを恐れと見ない、[この]邪見を受持する有情たちは、悪趣に行く。

Those beings who are ashamed of what is not ashameful and who are not ashamed of what is ashameful embrace wrong views and go to a lower plane of existence (duggati).


恥ずべからざるを恥じ、恥ずべきを恥じない、[この]邪見を受持する有情たちは、悪趣に行く。

Just as a border town is guarded both within and without, so guard yourself. Let not the right moment go by; for those who miss this opportunity come to grief when they fall into a woeful state(niraya).


内外共に守られたる辺境の城の如く、かくの如く自己を護れ！　実に[善き]機会を逃すことなかれ！　実に機会を逃した者は、地獄に堕ちて悲しむ。

It is better not to do an evil deed; an evil deed torments one later on. It is better to do a good deed as one does not have to repent for having done it.


悪作は為さぬ方がより善い。[何故ならば]悪作を[為した]後、悩み苦しむ[からである]。[しかし]善行は為した方がより善い。それを為した[後]、苦しみ悩まない[からである]。

If there is anything to be done, do it well; do it firmly and ener-getically; for the slack life a bhikkhu scatters much dust (of moral defilements).


もし、為すべきことがあれば、しっかり努力して、それを為せ！　実に、緩慢な遍歴者たちほど、さらに多くの塵を撒き散らす。

A loose deed or a corrupt course, or dubious "higher life", bring no great fruit.


[仏陀の弟子として]緩慢な行動、あるいは自ら汚染されたる誓戒、疑念を起こさせる梵行、これらは[修行の]大いなる結果をもたらさない。

Just as the kusa grass, if badly held, cuts that very hand, so also the ill-led life of a bhikkhu drags that bhikkhu down to naraya.


クサの[葉も]下手に[握れば]自分の手を切るが如く、沙門も[沙門としての]生活を誤れば、地獄に引き込まれる。

Thus, there is the acquisition of demerit, and there is rebirth in the evil apaya realms. The enjoyment of a scared man with a scared woman is short-lived, and the king also metes out severe punishment. Therefore, a man should not commit sexual misconduct with another man's wife.


不徳を得、死去して悪趣[地に堕ちる]、恐れたる人[＝姦夫]と恐れたる人[＝姦婦]との楽は、少しばかりである。そして国王は重い罰を与える。それ故、男は他人の妻に親近するな！
