Therefore, one should follow the steadfast, the wise, the learned, the patient, the dutiful, the Ariya; follow a man of such virtue and intelligent a man, as the moon follows the starry path.


実にそれ故に、賢く、智慧があり、多聞で、戒律の[重荷を]背負い、忍耐強く、まことに[頭陀行などを]修行する[悟りを得た]聖なる人、そのようなより賢き善人に、星の軌道に月が[従う]如く、親近せよ。

He who walks in the company of fools has to grieve for a long time. Association with fools is ever painful, as with an enemy; happy is association with the wise, as with meeting relatives.


実に愚者たちと共に行ずるは、長い時間愁う。まこと愚者との共住は、敵と常にいるが如く、苦痛である。[しかし]賢者との共住は、親族と同居するが如く、安楽なり。

It is good to see the Noble Ones (Ariyas); to live with them is always a pleasure; not seeing fools, one may ever be happy.


[悟りを得た]聖者たちを見るは、善きことなり。[聖者たちとの]共住は、常に安楽なり。愚者たちを見ざるは、常に安楽であろう。

He who had tasted the sweetness of solitude and the sweetness of tranquillity (of Nibbana). Such an one is free from fear and free from sin, for he drinks the sweetness of the joy of the Dhamma.


遠離を味わい、[涅槃の]寂静を味わい飲む。[このように]法喜を味わい飲む人は、苦悩なき無悪の[人]である。

Health is the greatest gain; contentment is the greatest wealth; a trusted friend is the best relative, Nibbana is the greatest happiness.


無病は最高の利得なり、知足は最高の財産なり。信頼[できる友人]は最高の親族なり、涅槃は無上の安楽なり。

Hunger is the greatest afflictions, the five khandhas are the greatest sufferings. The wise, knowing them as they really are, realize Nibbana, the greatest happiness.


飢餓は最大の病気なり、五蘊は最大の苦なり。これを如実に知りて、[賢者は]涅槃という無上の安楽を[得る]。

There is no fire like passion; there is no trouble like hatred; there is no sufferings like (the burden of) khandhas; there is no happiness that surpasses the Perfect Peace (i.e., Nibbana).


貪欲にひとしい炎はなく、瞋にひとしい不運はない。[五]蘊とひとしい苦はなく、[涅槃の]寂静以上の安楽はない。

Victory begets enmity, the defeated dwell in pain. Happily the peaceful live, discarding both victory and defeat.


勝利は[敗者の]怨みを生じ、敗北せる者は[悔しさ]に苦しみて臥す。勝敗を捨てた人[＝阿羅漢]は、寂静にして安楽に臥す。

Happy indeed we live, we who have no impediments. Feeders of joy we shall be, like the Radiant Gods.


何一つ障碍が無い故、[私たちは]実に幸福に生きる。天界の発光天の如く、喜悦を食として存在する。

Happy indeed we live, free from avarice amidst the avaricious. Amidst avaricious men we dwell free from avarice.


[貪欲に]熱心である[欲界の]中で、熱心になることなく生きることは、実に幸福である。[貪欲に]熱心である人々の中で、[私たちは]熱心になることなく住す。
