Delightful are the forests where worldly people do not take delight; the passionless will rejoice (therein), (for) they seek no sensual pleasures.


林野は楽しい。[しかし]その場所は人々が楽しむところではない。離貪[の人々]が楽しめる所である。[何故ならば]彼らは欲楽を求めるものではないからである。

Whether in village or in forest, in vale or on hill, wherever Arahants dwell, -that spot is delightful, indeed.


村も、林野も、又低地も、高地も、阿羅漢が住む所、みな楽土となす。

The man who is not credulous, who understands the Uncreated (Nibbana), who has cut off the links, who has put an end to occasion (of good and evil), who has discarded all desires, he indeed is a supreme man.


[盲]信せず、作られざるもの[＝涅槃]を知り、又[生死の]接合を破壊して、[善悪の]機会を失った、欲を吐ける人[＝阿羅漢]、彼こそ実に最上の人である。

Of such a one, pacified, released by proper understanding, calm is the mind, calm his speech and actions.


完全智によって[輪廻から]解脱した、静かな人[＝阿羅漢]の心は静かなり。その如く、語も、業[＝身]も又静かなり。

Like the earth, a balanced and well-disciplined person does not oppose. He is comparable to a firm pillar. He is like a pool, unsullied by mud; for such an arahat there will be no more rebirth.


善行者は、大地の如く、門柱の如く、[怒りによって]反応することはない。泥から離れたる池[の水]の如く、このような[阿羅漢]には輪廻はない。

He whose senses are subdued, like steeds well-trained by a charioteer, he whose pride is destroyed and is free from the corruptions, - such a steadfast one even the gods hold dear.


ちょうど御者によって善く訓練された馬の如く、[六]根が静まり、慢心を捨断して無漏である、そのような[阿羅漢は]神々からも熱望される。

He whose corruptions are destroyed, he who is not attached to food, he who has Deliverance, which is Void and Signless, as his object, -his path, like that of birds it the air, cannot be traced.


漏を滅尽して、[欲と邪見による]食に無依であり、空解脱・無相解脱を心のより所にする彼[阿羅漢]の行処は、ちょうど空を飛ぶ鳥の如く、[凡夫には]その足跡を観ることはできない。

They for whom there is no accumulation, who reflect well over their food, who have Deliverance, which is Void and Signless, as their object, -their course, like that of birds in the air, cannot be traced.


蓄積せず、食を遍知して、空解脱・無相解脱を心のより所にする彼[阿羅漢]の行処は、ちょうど空を飛ぶ鳥の如く、[凡夫には]その行方を観ることができない。

The mindful exert themselves, they are attached to no abode, like swans that quit their pools, they abandon home after home (and go).


[止・観の修習に]励む有念者は、[執着という]家を楽しまない。ちょうど白鳥が沼から飛び去るように、家々を捨てる。

For him who has completed the journey, for him who is sorrowless, for him who is wholly free from everything, for him who has destroyed all ties, the fever (of passion) does not exist.


[輪廻の]旅を終え、離憂にして、一切処において解脱する。一切の束縛を捨てた[阿羅漢たち]には、[煩悩という]熱は存在しない。
