Let one not neglect one's own welfare for the sake of another, however great. Clearly understanding one's own welfare, one should make every effort to attain Nibbana.


例え[それが]多いといえども、[比丘は]他人の利益のために[道・果・涅槃という]自分自身の利益を捨ててはならない。自分の利益を証知しながら自己の利益に[専ら]精進すべきである。

Indeed, by oneself is evil done, by oneself is one defiled. By oneself is evil left undone, by oneself is one purified. Purity and impurity depend entirely on oneself - no one can purify another.


自分自身によって実になされた悪行は、自分自身の汚れとなる。自分自身の悪行をなさぬことによって、自分自身が清浄となる。清浄と不浄とは[明らかに]別々である。[決して]他人が他人を清めることはできない。

The foolish man who, on account of his wrong views, scorns the teaching of the homage-worthly Noble Ones (Ariyas) who live according to the Dhamma, is like the bamboo (Katthaka) which bears fruit for its own destruction.


智慧のない人は、[悪]見に依る[故]、法に従う生活をする聖なる阿羅漢たちの教えを非難する。そしてカッタカ竹の果実の如く、[悪業の結果が]結実する[時]、自己を殺さしめる。

Easy to do are things that are bad and harmful to oneself, but exceedingly difficult to do are things that are good and beneficial.


不善、あるいは自分自身に不利益となる[行為は]容易である。[しかし]善、あるいは[自分自身に]利益となる[行為は]最高になし難い。

Just as a jungle creeper(maluva) strangles the tree(sala) on which it grows, even so a man who is exceedingly depraved harms himself as an enemy might wish.


沙羅の樹が葛に覆われて[やがて枯れる]如く、限度を越える破戒[＝悪行]をおこなう[人は]、敵が欲するままに[相手を苦しめる]如く、自分自身に対しておこなう。

The evil done by oneself, born of oneself, and produced by oneself, grinds a witless man as a diamond grinds a hard gem.


ダイヤモンドが堅きルビーを[打ち砕く]如く、自分自身でなされたる悪行は、自分より生じ、自分の[中で]生成され、智慧のない人を破砕する。

One indeed is one's own refuge; how can others be a refuge to one? With oneself thoroughly tamed, one can attain a refuge (i.e., Arahatta Phala), which is so difficult to attain.


実に自分自身こそ汝の守護者である。実に他の誰が[自分の]守護者となりえるか？　実によく調御された自分が、得難い守護者[＝阿羅漢果聖者]となり得る。

One should do what one teaches others to do; if one would train others, one should be well-controlled oneself. Difficult, indeed, is self-control.


他人を教訓する如く、自分自身もその如く実行しなければいけない。実に善く調御せられた[人こそ]、他人を指導することができる。自己を調御するとは、実に難しい。

One should first establish oneself in what is proper; then only should one instruct others. Thus the wise man will not be reproached.


最初に、自分自身に相応しい[方向に]落ち着かせるべきである。その次に、他人を教訓せよ。[そうすれば]賢者は[精神的に]疲れることはない。

If one knows that one is dear to oneself, one should protect oneself well. During any of the three watches (of life) the wise man should be on guard of (against evil).


もし、自分自身を愛する人のように知るならば、自分自身をよく守るべきである。賢者は、夜分の三つ[の中の]随一なものに不寝番すべきである。
