Weeds are the bane of fields; covetousness is the bane of mankind. Hence, what is given to those who are rid of covetousness yields great benefit.


田は雑草に荒らされる。人々は欲求という病根に[荒らされる]。それ故、実に離欲の人に施しをすれば、大いなる果報あり。

Weeds are the bane of fields; ignorance is the bane of mankind. Hence, what is given to those who are free from ignorance yields great benefit.


田は雑草に荒らされる。人々は愚痴という病根に[荒らされる]。それ故、実に離痴の人に施しをすれば、大いなる果報あり。

Weeds are the bane of fields; hatred is the bane of mankind. Hence, what is given to those who are free from hatred yields great benefit.


田は雑草に荒らされる。人々は瞋恚という病根に[荒らされる]。それ故、実に離瞋の人に施しをすれば、大いなる果報あり。

Weeds are the bane of fields; lust is the bane of mankind. Hence, what is giving to those who are free from lust yields great benefit.


田は雑草に荒らされる。人々はこの貪欲という病根に[荒らされる]。それ故、実に離貪の人に施しをすれば、大いなる果報あり。

Wealth destroys the foolish, but not those who seek the other shore (Nibbana). By his craving for wealth the fool destroys himself, as he would destroy others.


富財は、智慧の無い者たちを殺す。しかし、彼岸[＝涅槃]を求める人たちを[殺さ]ない。富財に対する渇愛によって智慧の無い人は、他人[を殺す]如く、自己を殺す。

The gift of the Dhamma excels all other gifts; the flavor of the Dhamma excels all other flavors; The pleasure in the Dhamma excels all other pleasures. He who has destroyed craving overcomes all ills (samsara dukkha).


『法施』はあらゆる布施に勝り、『法味』はあらゆる味わいに勝る。『法楽』はあらゆる楽に勝り、渇愛の滅尽はあらゆる苦に勝る。

I have overcome all, I know all, I am detached from all, I have given uo all; I am liberated from moral defilements having eradicated craving, I have attained Emancipation. having comprehended the Four Noble Truths by myself, whom should I call my teacher?


私は、一切に打ち勝てる者、一切を知る者、一切法に取著がない者、一切の[煩悩]を捨断した者、愛の滅尽[をなし]自らの神通によって解脱した者であると言う。[そのような私が]誰を[師匠と]指摘できようか。

He who is without craving and grasping, who is skilled in etymology and terms, who knows the grouping of letters and their sequence, he is called the bearer of his last body, one of profound wisdom, a great man.


渇愛を離れて執取が無く、[聖句の]語義を熟知して、その字母の配列や前後関係を知る彼は、実に『最後身』『偉大な智慧者』『大人』と呼ばれる。

He who has reached perfection is free from fear, free from craving, and free from moral defilements. He has cut off the thorns of existence. This is his final existence.


[悟りの]究竟に至りて怖畏がなく、渇愛から離れて無穢であり、有箭を断った人は、この身体が最終である。

A man who delights in subduing(evil) thoughts, who meditetes on impurity (of the body), and who is ever mindful, will certainly get rid (of craving); this man will cut the bond of Mara.


しかし、尋が静まることを楽しみ、不浄[観]を修習して、常に[自己の内外の現象に対して]意識を持つ人は、実にこのマーラの結縛を断ち、終滅させるであろう。
