A mother or father or any other close relative cannot make him happy. A well directed mind could make him much happier.


母も父も、その他の親類たちも、その人を[幸福に]することはできない。正しく[善に]置かれた心だけが、その人をより以上に優れた[幸福に]する。

Whatever (harm) an enemy would do to an enemy, and a ruber would do to the ruber, an ill-directed mind can do to far greater(harm).


敵が[他の]敵になす行為、あるいは怨ある人が[他の]怨ある人になす行為よりも、邪悪におかれた心こそ、その人をより以上に悪くする。

Sadly before long, alas! this body will lie on the earth, cast away, devoid of consciousness, just as a useless wooden log.


実に遠からずこの身は大地の上に横になる。[やがて]捨てられ意識が離れる、ちょうど使いみちのない木片のように。

Realizing that this body is (as fragile) as a jar, securing this mind (as firm) as a (fortified) city. He should attack Mara with the weapon of wisdom. He should guard his conquest and be without attachment.


ちょうど水瓶のように、この身は[壊れやすいものである]と知り、城のように、この心を[たとえに]置きて、智慧を武器として[煩悩という]悪魔と戦え！　打ち勝った[勝利を]守護せよ！　執着がないようにせよ！

He whose mind is not steadfast, he who is not affected (by anger), he who has transcended both good and evil- for such a vigilant one there is no fear.


煩悩に流されることなく、[怒りに]心が混乱することもなく、善と悪を捨断した眠らぬ人[=阿羅漢]には、恐怖はない。

He whose mind is not steadfast, he who does not know the true doctrine, he whose confidence waves- the wisdom of such a one will never be perfect.


心が確立せず、正法に無知であり、信仰が不安定な人の[悟りの]智慧は、完全とはならない。

The mind is faring far, wandering alone, bodiless, lying in a cave, (chamber of the heart). Those who subdue it are freed from the bond of Mara.


[心は]遠くに行き、独りでさすらう、身体ではなく[心臓という]洞窟の中にあるその心を制御する人は、悪魔の束縛から解脱する。

The mind is very hard to perceive, extremely subtle, settles wherever it likes. Let the wise person guard it; a guarded mind is conducive to happiness.


はなはだ見極め難く、繊細にして欲するところに降りて行くこの心を、賢者は守るべきである。守られた心こそ、安楽をもたらす。

This mind is hard to check, swift, settles wherever it likes: to control it is good. A controlled mind is conducive to happiness.


抑え難く、迅速で、欲するところに飛んで行くその心を調御することは、素晴らしいことである。よく調御された心は、幸福をもたらす。

Like a fish that is drawn from its watery home and thrown upon land, even so does this mind flutter. Therefore the realm of the passions should be shunned.


ちょうど水中の住処から引き出され、陸に投げ上げられた魚のような、[煩悩という]悪魔の領域から[離れられない]跳ね回るこの心を、捨てるべきである。
