Though little he recites the Sacred Text(Tipitaka), but acts in accordance with the teaching, forsaking lust, hatred and ignorance, truly knowing, with mind well freed, clinging to naught here and hereafter, he does attain the bliss of monkhood.


例えわずかしか[三蔵を]説かなくても、法に従った[生活を]おこない、貪欲と瞋恚と痴を捨て、正しい智慧があり、[煩悩から]心がよく解脱して、この世にもあの世にも執着しない人こそ、沙門の[果報]が配分される。

Though much he recites the Sacred Texts(Tipitaka), but act not accordingly, that heedless man is like a cowherd who counts others' cattles. The bliss of monkhood he does not reap.


例え多くの[三蔵を]説いても、これを実行せず、放逸な人は、他人の牛を数える牧牛者のように、沙門の[果報]は配分されない。

Here he is happy, hereafter he is happy. In both states the well-doer is happy. "Good have I done" (thinking thus), he is happy. Furthermore, is he happy, having gone to a blissful state.


善いことをした人は、この世で喜び、あの世で喜び、二つの世で喜ぶ。私は善いことをしたと喜び、善趣に進み、ますます喜ぶ。

Here he suffers, hereafter he suffers. In both states the evil-doer suffers. "Evil have I done" (thinking thus), he suffers. Furthermore, he suffers, having gone to a woeful state.


悪いことをする人は、この世で苦しみ、あの世で苦しみ、二つの世において苦しむ。自分は悪いことをしたと苦しみ、悪趣の渕に落ち込み、さらに多く苦しむ。

Here he rejoices, hereafter he rejoices. In both states the well-doer rejoices. He rejoices, exceedingly rejoices, perceiving the purity of his own deeds.


善いことをする人は、この世で喜び、あの世で喜び、二つの世において喜ぶ。自分の清らかな行為を見てその人は喜び、かつ満足する。

Here he grieves, hereafter he grieves. In both states the evil-doer grieves. He grieves, he is afflicted, perceiving the impurity of his own deeds.


悪いことをする人は、この世で悲しみ、あの世で悲しみ、二つの世で悲しむ。自分の汚れた行為を見てその人は悲しみ、かつ苦しむ。

Even as rain does not penetrate a well-thatched house, so does lust not penetrate a well-developed mind.


丁寧に屋根ふきをした家に雨漏りがないように、よく修習された心に貪欲は貫通しない。

Even as rain penetrates an ill-thatched house, so does lust penetrate an undeveloped mind.


粗末な屋根ふきをした家に雨漏りがあるように、修習のない心に貪欲は貫通する。

What is essential they regard as essential, what is unessential they regard as unessential, -they who entertain (such) right thoughts realize the essence.


真実であるものを真実と知り、真実でないものを真実でないと観る人は、正しい考えを持っている故、[法の]真髄を獲得できる。

In the unessential they imagine the essential, in the essential they see the unessential, -they who entertain (such) wrong thoughts never realize the essence.


真実でないものを真実と思い、真実であるものを真実でないと見る人は、誤った考えを持っている故、[法の]真髄を獲得できない。
