In the sky there is no footstep; outside the Buddha's Teaching there is no ariya bhikkhu (samana). There is no conditioned thing that is permanent; all the Buddhas are unperturbed (by craving, pride and wrong view).


空に足跡がなく、外教に沙門はいない。諸行に常はなく、諸仏陀には[渇愛・高慢・邪見による]動揺はない。

In the sky there is no footstep; outside the Buddha's Teaching there is no ariya bhikkhu(samana). All beings take delight in fetters (i.e., craving, pride and wrong view) that prolong samsara; all the Buddhas are free from these fetters.


空に足跡はなく、外教に沙門はいない。人々は輪廻を長びかせるものを楽しみ、如来たちには輪廻を長びかせるものはない。

In one who constantly sees the faults of others and is always disparaging them, moral intoxicants (asavas) increase; he is far from extinction of moral intoxicants.


他人の罪過を見て常に不満の想ある人は、その漏が増大する。[その結果]彼は漏尽[の境地]から離れて[行く]。

It is easy for one to see the faults of others, but difficult to see one's own. That man broadcasts the faults of others like winnowing chaff in the wind, but hides his own faults as a crafty fowler covers himself.


他の人々の罪過はよく見える、然るに自分の[罪過は]見難い。実に彼は他の人々の罪過を、籾殻の実と殻とにより分ける如く、[明らかに]さらす。しかし、自分の罪過は、ずる賢い賭博者が[不利な]サイコロを[隠すが]如く、覆い隠す。

There is no fire like passion, there is no grip like hatred, there is no snare like delusion, there is no river like craving.


貪欲にひとしい炎はなく、瞋恚にひとしい把持はない。痴にひとしい網はなく、渇愛にひとしい河はない。

He, who has this feeling of displeasure cut off, uprooted and removed, will surely attain concentration (samadhi) by day or by night.


そのような[不機嫌な]心を断絶して、それらの根元を破壊して根絶除去した彼は、実に昼も夜も禅定に到達する。

People give according to their faith and their devotion; one who is displeased with others receiving food and drink can not attain concentration (samadhi) by day or by night.


実に人々は信仰にしたがって、喜びにしたがって施す。他の人々から[施された]飲み物や食べ物に不機嫌になる彼は、昼も夜も禅定に到達することはない。

Know this, O man! Not restraining oneself is evil; do not let greed and ill will subject you to prolonged misery.


友よ、人よ、かくの如く知れ！　自制せざるは悪法なり。貪欲という不法が長い間汝を苦しめることなかれ！

He who destroys life, tells lies, takes what is not given him, commits adultery, and takes intoxicating drinks, digs up his own roots even in this very life.


生き物を殺す、あるいは嘘をつく、この世において与えざるものを取る、他人の妻[の所へ]行く、あるいは穀酒や果酒の飲み物[を飲む]。これらを実践する者たちは、この世において自分自身の根元を[地上に]掘り出し[枯れさせる]。

Hard is the life of the man who is modest, ever seeking what is pure, free from attachment, contained, blameless in conduct, possessed of vision clear.


慚にして常に[心の]清流を求めて、[物事に]愛着せず、高慢もなく[真理を明らかに]観る人の生活は難しいが、彼の生き方は清浄である。
