Even as rain does not penetrate a well-thatched house, so does lust not penetrate a well-developed mind.


丁寧に屋根ふきをした家に雨漏りがないように、よく修習された心に貪欲は貫通しない。

Even as rain penetrates an ill-thatched house, so does lust penetrate an undeveloped mind.


粗末な屋根ふきをした家に雨漏りがあるように、修習のない心に貪欲は貫通する。

What is essential they regard as essential, what is unessential they regard as unessential, -they who entertain (such) right thoughts realize the essence.


真実であるものを真実と知り、真実でないものを真実でないと観る人は、正しい考えを持っている故、[法の]真髄を獲得できる。

In the unessential they imagine the essential, in the essential they see the unessential, -they who entertain (such) wrong thoughts never realize the essence.


真実でないものを真実と思い、真実であるものを真実でないと見る人は、誤った考えを持っている故、[法の]真髄を獲得できない。

He who is purged of all stain, is well established in morals and endowed with self control and truthfulness, is indeed worthy of the yellow robe.


[悟りの力で]煩悩を吐き出し、戒めを身につけて[六根の]調御と真実を具える、その人こそ袈裟衣を着る資格あり。

Whoever, unstainless, without self control and truthfulness, should don the yellow robe, is not worthy of it.


煩悩をもったまま、[六根の]調御と真実から離れて、袈裟衣を着ても、その人に袈裟衣を着る資格なし。

Whoever lives contemplating the bodily impurities, with senses restrained, moderate in food, steady in effort and faith, Mara does not overthrow him as the gale (does not overthrow) a rocky mountain.


[この名色は]不浄であると観て、[六]根を防御して、食べ物において適度を知り、信仰があり、精進に励む人を、ちょうど風が岩山を倒すことができない如く、その人を実に[煩悩の]悪魔が征服することはできない。

Who ever lives contemplating pleasant things, with unrestrained senses, immoderate in food, indolent, inactive, Mara surely overthrows him as easily as the gale (overthrows) a weak tree.


[この名色は]清浄であると観て、[六]根を防御せず、食べ物において適度を知らず、怠堕で不精進な人を、ちょうど風が弱った樹を倒すが如く、その人を実に[煩悩の]悪魔が征服する。
