One in whom passion, ill will, pride and the mind of betrayal have fallen away, like a mustard seed from the point of an awl, him I call a Brahman.


錐先のマスタードの粒の如く、貪と瞋と、慢と覆とを落とせる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who is friendly in the midst of the hostile, who is peaceful in the midst of the violent, and who is unattached in the midst of the attached, him I call a Brahman.


害意ある人々の中において害意なく、棒を取れる人々の中において寂静であり、取著ある人々の中において無取著な彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who has given up any use of force towards beings, whether feeble or strong, and who neither kills nor cause others to kill, him I call a Brahman.


[恐怖に]震える者に、あるいは震えない者に、生きとし生けるものに炊いて杖を下に置き、殺さず、殺さしめざる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

One who is not intimate with either householder or with those who have left home, or with both, who wanders without an abode, and who is without desires, him I call a Brahman.


在家者にも、出家者にも、あるいはその両者にも交際接触せず、家無く遍歴せる少欲な彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。
