That one who dwells in seclusion, practising tranquillity and insight meditation, who is stainless, who has done his duty and is free from corruptions, and who has attain the Highest Goal(arahatship), him I call a Brahman.


[心の]塵から離れて[独り]座り、禅定に入りて、なすべきことを為し、無漏にて、最上義に到達した彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

That one for whom there exists neither the near shore (the sense bases) nor the far shore (the sense objects), nor both the near and far shore, the one who is undistressed and unbound, him I call a Brahman.


彼岸も此岸も、あるいは彼岸此岸も存在せず、苦悩から離れ、離縛せる彼を、私は婆羅門[＝阿羅漢]と言う。

When the brahman is well-established in the two dhammas (Concentration and Insight), a brahmana has reached the further shores, then in that knowing one, all fetters come to an end.


[止・観の]二つの法を[修習]した時、婆羅門は彼岸に到れる存在である。又[四聖諦を]悟った彼には、一切の結縛が尽滅していく。
