第345偈、第346偈

Iron, word or hemp bonds are not strong bonds, say the wise. Longing for jewels, ornaments, children, and wives is a far stronger attachments. That bond is strong, say the wise. That attachment appears yielding, but it is difficult to unfasten, and it drags one down. The wise, cutting off this bond of craving and resolutely giving up sensual pleasures, renounce the world.


賢者たちは、鉄や木や草[で作られた環]に堅固な拘束[力]があるとは言わない。宝石や耳環に対する執着、あるいは子供や妻に対する愛情こそ、賢者たちは引きずり、ゆるやかで、解脱し難い、堅固な拘束があると言う。これさえも断ち切り、無視しながら愛欲と楽を捨てて、[賢者たちは]遍歴する。
