As long as the roots are undamaged and firm, a tree, though cut down, grows again. In the same way, when latent craving is not rooted out, this sorrow (dukkha) arises again and again.


樹が切断されたといえども、その根に害なく堅固である限り、再び成長する如く、愛随眠が根絶されざる限り、この苦は再三再四生起する。

This I say to you: good fortune to you [all], as many as are here assembled, dig up the root of craving just as he who seeks its sweet root digs up the birana grass. Do not let Mara crush you again and again as the flood destroys the reed.


私は汝たちに説く: ここに来集せる[多くの]人々が幸福であれ、ビーラナ草の根の如く、渇愛の根を掘り出せ。汝たちよ、葦が流される如く、再三再四悪魔に破壊されることなかれ。

In this world, sorrow falls away from one who overcomes this vile, unruly craving just as water-drops fall away from a lotus-leaf.


[しかし]この世において捨て難き、その卑しき渇愛に打ち勝てば、それ故に、蓮の葉の水滴の如く、[彼らから]憂いが落ちる。

In this world, sorrow grows in one is overcomed by vile, unruly craving just as well-watered birana grass grows luxuriantly.


この世において執着してはこれら卑しき渇愛が[人々に]打ち勝ち、ビーラナ草に雨が降り[増殖するが]如く、彼らに憂いが増大する。

The craving of a person who lives heedlessly grows like a maluva creeper. He jumps from birth to birth like a monkey seeking fruits in the forest.


放逸な生活をする人には、カズラ草の如く、渇愛が増大する。森の猿が果実を求めるが如く、彼は[死後も]彼方此方の世界に漂う。
