It is better to live alone; there is no companionship with a fool. Let one live alone, doing no evil, carefree, like an elephant Matanga roaming alone in the forest.


愚者との親交は[正しい生活に利益が]なく、独り歩む[方が]より善い。そして林中の象の如く、無関心であり、いろいろな悪をなすことなく、独り歩め！

If one cannot find a sagacious companion, who is virtuous and steadfast, like a king renouncing a conquered kingdom. one should live alone, like an elephant Matanga roaming free in the forest.


もし、正しい生活をしている賢者を友として得られなかったならば、征服せる領土を捨てる王の如く、あるいは林中の象の如く、一人歩め！

If one finds a sagacious companion, virtuous and steadfast, one should live with him, mindfully and joyfully, overcoming all dangers.


もし、正しい生活をしている賢者を友として得たならば、共に歩むべきである。それによって一切の危難に打ち勝ち、心楽しく不放逸な[生活が]送れるだろう。

Take joy heedfulness. Guard your mind well. Extricate yourself from the mud of moral defilements. You are just like the elephant struck fast in the mud.


不放逸を楽しめ！　汝の心を守れ！　難路[＝執着]から自己を上げよ！　[汝たちは]泥中に沈む象の如くなり。
