In the past, this mind went wandering where it liked, as it wished, at its own pleasure. Today I will control my mind wisely, as a mahout controls with his hook an elephant in rut.


以前にはこの心は欲求のままに好きな所へ、気楽に行ったり来たりしていた。[しかし]今はその[心は]正しく抑止せらるべし、象師が発情中の象を[制するが]如く。

When one gives in to torpor, gluttony, and sloth, spending time lying around like a great hog fed on corn, such a stupid one will enter the womb again and again.


怠惰で大食をなし、又ごろごろ横たわりて眠る、餌に育てられたる大豚の如く、愚鈍に人は、繰り返し母体に入り[輪廻を続ける]。

The uncontrollable captive tusker named Dhanapala, deep in rut, eats not a morsel, but remembers the elephant forest (longing to look after his mother).


ダナパーラという名の象は、激しい発情期には制し難く、繋がれたる[象は]、餌を食べず、象たちが[住む]象森を憶う。

Surely, not on riding-animals such as these (horses and elephants) can one go to that untrodden land (Nibbana); Tamed, one must go upon the tamed; upon one's own well-tamed self.


実に、これらの乗り物によりて、[彼は]未到の地[＝涅槃]に行くことはできないであろう。自ら善く調御せられたる人こそ、修行と自制によりて[その地に]到達できる。
