In those who are ever vigilant, who train themselves night and day in the three sikkha (sila, samadhi and panna), and who have their minds directed towards Nibbana, defilements are destroyed.


常に不眠にて昼夜に[三学を]学び、[その心は]涅槃に志向している人々には、諸々の煩悩が没す。

The arahats, who do not harm others and are always restrained in their actions, go to the deathless Nibbana, where there is no sorrow.


[他に対して]不害であり、常に[自己の]身心を制御する托鉢僧たちは、不死の境地に行く。到達したその境地には愁いはない。

One should speak the truth, one should not get anger, one should give when asked even if it is only a little. By these three acts, one may go to the world of the devas.


真実を話す、怒ることがない、乞求があれば、例え少しでも施す。実にその三つの要因によって、[死後]天界のそばへ行く。

One should overcome anger with loving-kindness; one should overcome evil with good; one should overcome the stingy with gifts, and the speaker of falsehood with truth.


怒り無きによって怒りに勝ち、善によって不善に勝ち、布施によって物惜しみに勝ち、真理によって妄語者に勝つ。

He who restrains his rising anger as a skilful charioteer checks a speeding chariot, - him I call a true charioteer; other charioteers only hold the reins.

迷走する車[を制御するが]如く、実に飛び上がった忿りを制御する人を、私は[実の]『御者』と呼ぶ。他の人は手綱を取らしめる[名のみの御者]なり。

Give up anger, abandon conceit, overcome all fetters. He who clings not to Name, Form, Mind and Body, and is free from dukkha, is not beset with pain.


忿りを捨てよ！　慢心を捨てよ！　一切の束縛を乗り越えよ！　[身体という]名色に執着しない、無障碍の人に苦がついて来ない。

In the same way, a man's good deeds will receive him who has performed them when he goes from this world to the other, just as relatives receive a dear one on his return.


そのように善行を積み[重ねて]この世から来世に到る人を、善行[の福徳]が、愛する人の帰りを親族が[迎える]如く、彼を[喜んで]受けいれる。

When a man who has long been absent return home safely from afar, he is welcomed with joy by his kinsmen, friends and well-wishers on his return.


久しく故郷を離れて遠方から無事に帰る人を、親族や友人あるいは知人たちは、その帰りを大いに喜ぶ。

He who has developed a desire for the the Ineffable (i.e., Nibbana), whose mind reaches the same and is no longer attached to the sensual world (kamaloka), is called one who is bound upstream (uddhamsoto).


言葉で説明できない[涅槃の境地に到達したい]意欲を生起させ、意によって[その境地に]触れ、[不還道智によって]欲界に執着がない心[の聖者を]、『上流を求める人』と呼ぶ。

He who is endowed with Virtue and Insight, who is established in the Dhamma, who has realized the Truth and performs his own duties, is loved by all men.


戒と[正しい]見を具足して、法住にて真理を理解する、自己のなすべきことをなす人は、多くの人々から好かれる。

From craving arises grief; from craving arises fear. For him who is free from craving there is no grief. How can there be fear?


渇愛から憂いが生まれ、渇愛から恐れが生まれる。渇愛から脱せる人には憂いはない、どこからも恐れはない。
